Grid Trading: how to profit from sideways markets
After this lesson you'll understand how algorithms turn boring, sideways markets into a steady income stream — and why this is the foundation of every serious trading desk.
In 2023, a New York firm earned $47 million in a single day without forecasting a single price move. They didn't read news. They didn't predict trends. They did exactly one thing: placed orders in the right places. The mechanic is called grid trading, and by the end of this lesson you'll see exactly how it works.
The core idea
Grid trading is a market-making strategy that profits from price oscillation, not direction.
The algorithm places a 'grid' of buy orders below the current price and sell orders above it. Every time price wiggles, the bot fills one side, then the other, capturing a tiny profit on each cycle. The wider the volatility, the more cycles. The tighter the spread, the more cycles per move. Crucially, you do not need to know where the market is going — you just need it to move.
How it actually works
- 1
Set the range
Pick a price corridor where the asset has been trading. Example: BTC between $62,000 and $64,000.
- 2
Lay the grid
Place 20 buy orders evenly spaced inside the corridor, and 20 matching sell orders 0.2% above each buy.
- 3
Let price oscillate
Each time price ticks down it fills a buy. Each time it ticks back up it fills the matching sell. Profit on every cycle: ~0.2% minus fees.
- 4
Compound the wins
On a calm BTC day, the bot finishes 40+ cycles. None of them require a forecast. None of them care about the news.
Why it works
Markets spend ~70% of their time in a range. Grid trading is the only strategy purpose-built to monetize that 70%.
Most retail strategies need a trend to make money. Grids need the opposite — and that's why market makers love them. While trend-followers wait for a breakout, grid traders are clipping coupons on every wiggle. The math is simple: small edge × thousands of executions = a real return.
The catch
Grids hate strong one-directional trends. If price breaks out of your corridor and never comes back, you're holding the bag. That's why Mantix continuously re-tunes the grid based on the current market regime — wider when volatility expands, narrower when it compresses, paused when a clear trend takes over.

Grids are not exciting. That's why they work. Steady beats spectacular — every time, on a long enough horizon.
